On 18-19 September 2025, 12 Doctoral Researchers participated in the ethics and responsible innovation training in Amsterdam
The course was organised in the MSCA doctoral training network MELOMANES on Improving metastatic melanoma treatments. Together with partners from VU university Amsterdam and the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, I led a course aiming to:
- Raise awareness of pertinent ethical issues
- Foster dialogue on dilemma’s related to responsible research in nanomedicine and cancer research
- Improve your skills in applying relevant ethical theories and concepts in your research
- Stimulate fruitful interdisciplinary collaboration in MELOMANES and open engagement with external stakeholders and citizens
Thursday Morning, 18 September, the focus was on Introduction to Ethics and Responsible Research and Innovation. Thursday afternoon, participants engaged in discussions on Safe and Sustainable by Design of melanoma cancer therapy, emphasising ethics and value-conflicts. On Friday, 19 September, participants reflected on voluntary codes of conduct and their personal core values for the MELOMANES Amsterdam pledge.

On 4 September, I discussed how the Ethical Impact Assessment methodology could be adapted to different types of research with societal impacts, during the Symposium on Societal Impact of Research at the UMCG in Groningen. This was the latest edition of Dutch Impact Alliance Live. Download my presentation here .
